What is your take on the 7th Generation Gaming Market?

Nintendo Wii: I have really come to love this system. Nintendo has really gone for a creative way to game where button mashing requires some physical movement. But, while it is revolutionizing motion-sensing gameplay, I have found that the lack of decent graphics makes me want to play my N64 instead.

Games of Choice: SSB: Brawl, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

Sony PS3: The PS3 is a ps2, with a new graphics card, shoved into a dvd player, then shoved into an apple computer. The extensive Playstation Network is a great add on. I love the variety of games from the great graphics of MotorStorm, to the Genji 2's "real time weapon change". But, these graphics aren't all they are cracked up to be. Sonic the Hedgehog loads while you play so you are constantly looking over cut-off bridges.

Microsoft Xbox 360: The 360 is for the Red Bull chugging, pantyraidng assholes who wil someday be bagging my groceries. There are 2 kinds of games on the xbox, Games with guns, and Games with footballs. The 360 offers fun games that anyone can pick up and learn. It has an above-adequate graphics system that loads fast. The Xbox Live feature is fun and easy to use and gives you the chance to play with your friends/others online.

Games of Choice: Halo 3, Bioshock, Gears of War

Bullshit. I don't think my parents could figure out Halo - there's too many buttons. They could definitely figure out Wii sports though. It's pretty established that Nintendo has the pick-up-and-play games.

You can only really approach the Wii with one mindset: Not give a shit about the visuals - only whether the motion-controls add to the gaming experience.

I agree, but it is generally acknowledged to be the hardest system to code for, and it is still very early in the life-cycle of a system expected, by Sony, to last 10 years.

I agree that the 360 control scheme is often overly complicated. I haven't played the PS3 at all yet but I imagine it's comparable since the controllers haven't' changed much, but the 360 plays just arcade games on steroids most of the time. You can't paint an entire system's game library with a single brush though.

I really dig the Wii because it's something new. I know, novelty can get old fast, but I am sick of "the new Grand Theft Auto" or "the next Final Fantasy" or whatever some other company's new take on a previous success is. At least it's giving game designers new opportunities for creative gameplay. And no, I really don't give a shit about visuals and graphics anymore.

I recently bought a 360. It's a piece of crap. the disc drive rattles and groans, the fans are noisy, it crashes with 2 red lights and shuts down on any warm day, and the media centre aspect is a fucking joke. Xbox Live borders on extorsion, especially as it won't allow you to browse any free online game servers.

The games are great with a huge selection, even if the sooks can't work out how to play Halo.

I'm yet to play the PS3 (other than when the store clerk and army of 10yo's kicked me out for hogging Motor Storm) but there's few reports of console failures here, the games are made from awesome, and the limited reports of it's media capabilities have so far been positive.

The Wii looks like fun, but it's a games console for people with goldfish attention spans and has no other functionality.

The only downside I can see for the PS3 is the massive price, and the only upside I can see for the Wii is it's cheap price, and funky controller.

FWIW here in Oz the pricing is:

PS3 $999 with no extras. The new 40GB poverty Pack is $600
Xbox 360 is $550ish for the standard console with no extras. $670ish for the elite, and $350 for the core.
Wii is $499, usually with a couple of games.

True, and lots of people do it, though there's a couple of traps:

Lack of warranty (especially on the hit-and-miss 360 quality)
Cost of postage (can vary wildly depending on what drugs the USPS guy is on)
NTSC is the shittest format, it really drops quality compared to PAL. Not so bad if it's going to be used through HDMI though.

I did think about it for the PS3, though. I didn't consider it for the iPhone, you guys can keep that crap haha

NTSC has a higher framerate - it's smoother than PAL :p

PAL has higher resolution than NTSC. Also, corrects tint errors automatically.

However, playing back film (originally at 24 fps) on a 30 fps NTSC system is done much better than the speedup method used for PAL, which bumps the 24 fps to 25 fps, but results in some audio distortion.

Also, as far as your eye can tell, 24, 25 and 30 fps should all look identical to the human eye, assuming there will be no lag in processing the signals which could drop the fps to lower than the ~16 fps required by the theory of persistence of vision.

Yeah they say the eye can only see up to 25 frames or so - but videogames at 60fps just seem smoother :p

dunno, it's all a bit to nerd for me, but at the end of the day I'm yet to see an NTSC file or movie played side by side with the same one in PAL that looks better.
