ah... the old debate... cheap and nasty vs. expensive and tasty!
lemme guess here poeple... cheap and nasty wins most of the time doesnt it?
especially when theres a whole night to consider...
eww, nope! always stick to the good stuff - just get a few under the belt before you leave home

oh no doubt...
but when it comes to spending $9-$10 per drink when out, one's standards can drop a touch...
besides, after you've had 5 or 6,. you cant tell the difference anymore anyway...

oooooooo! You'll enjoy that billabongbabe!
Last night was at a Japanese restaurant, so drank some hot saki, some unfiltered saki, some plum wine, a couple of 15 year old Japanese scotches, and finished with a 17 year old Japanese scotch. Nom nom nom!
Tonight, a Jamesons at the pub, then to a mates house where had some red wine. so nice!

well, thanks for makin me feel like an uncultured bum Slaine and Billabongbabe!
The fact that i am an uncultured bum isn't the issue here...

Sláine

The unfiltered Saki is yummy as. Taken cold rather than hot, and it looks a little disturbing, but its got a really refreshing taste, and you can'ty taste the alcohol at all (its 9.8%)
The scotch is interesting. The story I was told that a true scotsman immigrated to Japan, but missed his scotch so much he started making it over there. So it is very much like your normal Scottish scotches. I THINK it was made by Suntory if you wanted to find some. Its well worth the hunt too, quite nice
But its not Laphroig! That stuff is so nummy!
We've got a club here in Adelaide that sells itself as a cigar and cocktail lounge (altho with the no smoking laws, not sure any more). They have a list of about 30 very high end scotches. I'm still waiting for a weekend working through their list, or maybe over a few weekends. Its gonna cost well over $200 to get through them all too.
Luke__C
06-29-2008, 09:25 PM
an expensive but memorable weekend that would be Slaine ol pal...
a veritable plethory of palate tingling fun!
billabongbabe
06-29-2008, 10:56 PM
Oh man, me wants one of those kinda bars!
I couldn't go even half way towards trying all those scotches in one sitting tho - after about the 7th or 8th one, I may as well be drinking Queen Adelaide anything for all I'd know lol
Luke__C
06-29-2008, 11:13 PM
very true...
studies have shown that after around 7-10 standard drinks, people can't tell the difference between a heavy beer, a light beer and a glass of water in a blindfoled taste test
This is of course excluding the fact that beer has bubbles and a different texture than water...
shut up... you know what i mean
MulletMan
06-30-2008, 02:49 PM
I don't know about down there, but up here we have lots of scotch tasting events. My dad hits them a few times a year, and has come away with some really nice bottles. It's nice because you get to try a million kinds of scotch, with the authorities (ie, people that know about it.. not the police) present to explain and try to sell it with stories, distilling techniques and whatnot.
Luke__C
06-30-2008, 05:57 PM
nice...
we have similar things here, but with Australia's massive wine industry, its more of a wine that a spirits thing...
MulletMan
06-30-2008, 08:47 PM
Yeah, there's probably more wine than scotch tastings here too, but utilizing wines from around the world moreso (since BC is only slightly above second-class relatively, speaking winewise). Both are great times.
It's Canada Day here, so I'll be drinking lots I guess. Well, Canada day (and the stat holiday) is tomorrow, so I guess people go out tonight? Anyway, it's disgusting and fascinating how big Canada Day seems to be to Canadians..

it may do wonders, James. I have grown up with chronic hayfever every Spring (taking nasal cortisoids, antihistamine eyedrops, etc).
Two years ago, I went gluten free, and for the last 2 Spring seasons, I have not had hayfever. go figure!

currently enjoying a ribena/vanilla vodka cocktail...pretty nom nom!
MulletMan
07-05-2008, 02:38 PM
That sounds way tasty. I had no idea what ribena was, so I had to look it up and look what I learned.
Ribena can be mixed with the alcoholic, anise flavoured drink, Pernod. Water & ice are then added to produce the cocktail named the 'King of Denmark'. Sounds amaaazing, I want a King of Denmark!
I drank wayyy too many vodka-waters last night. Once you drink a few ryes, the v-ws taste just like straight water. You can trick yourself into drinking more of them, faster. I'm starting to think this might be a bad thing about them...
I've recently discovered vodka waters and they're totally dangerous! But at least you're staying hydrated so I have yet to get a hangover from any which is always a nice thing :). Anyway, I drank a loooot of red wine tonight and then enjoyed some SAKE!

We've discussed this here before. It is commonly spelled both ways.
Some people replace the a with a double-dot (whatever they call that) as simply an a.
Some people replace it with an ae, presumably for a more phonetic approach.
You get to choose.

A few pints. Mill St. Brewery's "Tankhouse" Ale has a deep copper-red colour. Five different malts are used to produce a complex malty texture. The spicy Cascades hop is used to give an assertive hop flavour, aroma and bitterness. The result is a satisfying and complex-tasting beer.

a new creation we call a VCR
1 shot vodka, 1.5 shot rasberry cordial, top up with coke in a scotch glass
a newer creation we call a VVCR
as above but with vanilla vodka...
and a couple of shots agua... nice

it has an interesting back story...
my housemates cousin can't drink drunkahol cos she's alergic(well not really, but thats the easier explanation)
when she goes out, she drinks coke with rasberry cordial in it, and bounces off the walls all night!
they're actually quite nice, but very sweet... se we decided to drunkaholise it, and hijinx ensued as hijinx tend to do when experimenting with new drink combinations...
