I think the 3D Modeled wrecking ball was part of a joke... however it's rendered to look 2D so maybe that still counts as 2D to the simpsons :p

i was watching something that was comparing south park to the simpsons and they were saying the reason south park manages to stay fresh with up to date material is because they can make an episode so quickly, while apparently it takes an extremely long time to make one single simpsons episode.
