The damn cool Half-Life mod, Natural-Selection, just got released on Halloween. If you have Half-Life, you must get this mod. It is seriously one of the coolest, if not the coolest, game I have ever played.
Need more info? Well, NS has the sort of "aliens found in outer-space, special marine force made to kill them" theme, but with a lot of rich and high-quality backstory and writing that really showcase the uniqueness of the NS universe. The gameplay itself is what is truely revolutionary - it is a FPS, using (mostly) a first-person perspective, but it's a strategy game. Structures, new units, researching - all the things that have made Blizzards' and Westwood Studios' excellent titles are all there.
The coolest thing about the game is commander mode. This lets one of the marines (sorry, aliens have no commander, more on that in a sec) have a top-down classic RTS perspective to build buildings and buy weapons for his troops. The only trick is that the commander has to actually lead his men, as they are real people, and real people don't tend to follow orders well.
To counter, the aliens are faster and stronger individually, and can "wordlessly communicate" through a special hive-sight HUD (I've played this, it's really cool, and pretty easy to use too).
I know this isn't a gaming site, but I figured that because many of the people here play PC games, someone might find this post interesting.
For more info on NS go to www.natural-selection.com (I don't work for them, just so you know)
BTW, Spider Gaming in Iowa City has a very good NS server running. Most of the NS servers aren't very stable, and many people on our server have said that ours was the best they had played on. I think the IP is 67.41.88.222:27016, but it might change by the time someone reads this (we have been having some small difficulties wit our router, so it needs to get restarted some times. It shouldn't need to be anymore though.) Just search for the mod "ns" in a mod search on www.gametiger.net then "find" (ctrl-f) the word "iowa" and Iowa City Spider Gaming 2 (NS) should pop up. Also, if you have trouble downloading NS from their mirror list, we have a mostly unused mirror at www.spidergaming.com.
